- Reuters satellite images show attack aircraft and military vehicles deployed at a new military base in Laos
- The facility represents China's first overseas military base, positioned near US allies in Asia, and reportedly caught the US off guard
Why it matters: A confirmed Chinese military base on Laotian soil with attack aircraft extends Beijing's power-projection reach into mainland Southeast Asia, adjacent to US treaty allies — and the framing that America 'didn't see it coming' underscores a significant intelligence gap in tracking overseas PLA expansion.
