- Tesla launched a new U.S. referral program that pays owners in FSD (Supervised) instead of car sales: the referred owner receives one free month of FSD, and the referrer receives a free month or a $99 Tesla Credit once that owner starts paying.
- Refer and Earn no longer lists any vehicle as a qualifying purchase — buyer benefits now apply only to solar panels, while referrer benefits cover solar, first demo drives (up to 30 over an account's lifetime) and the new FSD referral; Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck appear only under loyalty benefits, while Model S and Model X aren't listed at all.
- Tesla did not announce the change, and the page is stamped "Updated February 24, 2026," leaving unclear when vehicles came off the list; when the program was revived in August 2024, a buyer got $1,000 off a Model S, X, Y or 3 and the referrer got $500 in credit.
- Tesla app — referral links sit under "Refer and Earn" in version 4.62.0 or later; only owners paying FSD monthly or holding it outright from before Tesla stopped selling it can share, and the recipient must already own a compatible registered Tesla, cannot have paid for FSD in the past 12 months or bought it outright, while new buyers on a free trial stay locked out until 12 months after that trial ends.
- Tesla Credit — referral rewards are capped at 12 per calendar year, so the maximum is one year of FSD or $1,188 in credits; credits expire after 12 months and can't be cashed out, and Tesla's own pages disagree on payout timing, with one saying the referrer is paid when the friend subscribes during the trial and the other after it.
- Elon Musk — the 2025 CEO Performance Award includes a milestone of 10 million active FSD subscriptions, which is why Tesla began disclosing the subscriber count in January; the free month a referred friend receives does not count toward that total, but a paid conversion does.
- FSD — Tesla stopped selling the feature outright on February 14 and new U.S. customers can now only subscribe at $99 a month; the Q3 shareholder letter reported 1.74 million active subscriptions (including past upfront buyers, excluding free trials), up 67% year over year, against about 8.9 million vehicles sold by the end of 2025, with Electrek estimating 10 million subscriptions is still roughly eight years away at Q3's pace.
Why it matters: Existing Tesla owners now get paid to convert, not to sell: with buyers earning nothing on vehicle purchases and referrals capped at 12 a year ($1,188), Tesla is mining subscriptions from a fleet of about 8.9 million vehicles that includes just 1.74 million paying FSD subscribers — the same count tied to Musk's 10 million goal.
