- GM recalled 14,540 Cadillac Vistiq SUVs — 13,629 from the 2026 model year and 911 from 2027 — with NHTSA estimating 100% of the affected vehicles carry the defect.
- The defect involves power third-row seating that may malfunction and trap a passenger, especially a child, increasing injury risk, according to GM's July 1 letter to NHTSA.
- GM launched its investigation in March 2026 after "a different vehicle manufacturer" announced a recall for the same issue — almost certainly Hyundai, whose 2026 Palisade recall followed the death of a two-year-old in Ohio who became trapped in the back seat.
- GM is aware of six other incidents or complaints linked to the defect but said none resulted in injuries, distinguishing the Vistiq situation from the Hyundai fatality.
- GM halted 2027 Cadillac Vistiq shipments on June 8, 2026, and will have dealers disable and replace the folding third-row seat module free of charge until replacement parts arrive.
- Cadillac owners are expected to receive notification letters by August 3, 2026; the recall number is N262555780 and the NHTSA campaign number is 26V394.
Why it matters: Every Vistiq produced carries the defect, forcing a fleet-wide remedy on a freshly launched luxury EV while GM deals with a problem it first flagged only after a rival's fatal recall. With six complaints logged but zero GM injuries, the recall sets a template for how regulators and competitors respond when seat-trap hazards cross between brands.
