- Ford told NHTSA on July 6 it is recalling 42,784 Mustang Mach-E vehicles from model years 2021-2023 equipped with rear-wheel drive drivetrains over a potentially faulty rear differential pinion shaft.
- The shaft may bend, fracture, or break, causing a loss of drive power or allowing the vehicle to roll on its own when in Park without the parking brake engaged; a Malfunction Indicator Light may also illuminate.
- Ford's Development Team first identified the defect in a 2023 Mustang Mach-E in Europe in March, and as of June 11 the company was aware of 62 warranty claims, 14 global common quality indicator system reports, 4 customer reports, and 2 European white alerts.
- No accidents, injuries, or fires have been reported in connection with the defect, Ford said, and the root cause remains under investigation.
- Interim warning letters will be mailed to owners on July 13, with a follow-up and free dealer repair or replacement of the rear differential assembly expected in late December 2026.
- The recall carries Ford recall number 26S50, and owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 with questions.
Why it matters: Owners of 42,784 RWD Mustang Mach-Es from 2021-2023 face a concrete driving hazard — sudden power loss or rollaway — yet Ford says the fix won't be available until late December 2026, roughly five months away. The July 13 warning letter and a parking-brake workaround are the only safeguards in the interim, and Ford admits the root cause is still unknown.
