Tony Romo arrested for DUI with open alcohol bottle

- Tony Romo was stopped by Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputies on Interstate 43 on July 23 after being seen passing cars in a gore area, and questioned deputies about what a gore area was during the stop.
- An open bottle of an alcoholic beverage was discovered on the passenger's side of Romo's black Jeep during an inventory before the vehicle was towed, per one of three citations released by the Sheriff's Office.
- Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests, was taken into custody, booked and released, and was later cited for refusing to take an intoxication test after arrest; his court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.
- Body camera footage shows Romo told deputies he was coming from a golf course and heading "to visit grandma and grandpa" when stopped; a deputy cited "red glassy eyes" and an "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage" as the basis for suspecting impairment.
- Romo, 46, has been CBS' lead NFL game analyst since 2017 after a 2004-16 career spent entirely with the Dallas Cowboys, where he remains the franchise's all-time leader in career touchdown passes with 248.
- Romo went to high school in Burlington, Wisconsin, roughly 35 miles from Milwaukee, linking him personally to the jurisdiction where the stop occurred.
Why it matters: Romo holds one of the most visible broadcasting seats in sports as CBS' lead NFL analyst, and a Sept. 21 court date on a DUI-related refusal citation puts his on-air role under a legal cloud at the start of the NFL season.
