- WEF released its 2026 Technology Pioneers cohort of 100 early-stage startups from 23 countries, with the WEF noting the cohort is focused on building the software and physical infrastructure needed to scale AI, distinct from recent advances centered on models and consumer applications.
- India contributed nine startups to the cohort, the WEF noted, with many focused on deep-tech and space innovation; the country's cumulative entries now stand at 28, including Agnikul Cosmos, Cropin, Digantara, GalaxEye, Niramai, Pixxel, and Sarvam AI.
- Space technology dominates India's nine newcomers, with Dhruva building small satellite platforms, Bellatrix Aerospace developing in-space propulsion, Ethereal Exploration Guild working on reusable launch vehicles, and OrbitAID developing on-orbit satellite servicing including refuelling, repair, and de-orbiting.
- Airbound is operating drone networks to deliver blood and critical medical supplies to rural healthcare systems, while Sarla Aviation is building electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for urban air mobility.
- Varaha is leveraging remote sensing and blockchain for agriculture-based climate solutions in developing markets, and Fermbox Bio is producing alternative lipids, proteins, and green chemicals through fermentation-based biomanufacturing.
- The United States accounts for the largest national share at 43 entries, followed by China with 10, the UK with 8, Japan with 5, and South Korea with 4; South Korea recorded its strongest representation to date across AI, robotics, and quantum technologies.
- The Technology Pioneers program, launched in 2000, selects early-stage companies for their potential significant impact on business and society and invites them to engage with public and private sector leaders through WEF's global platform.
Why it matters: India matching the WEF's largest non-US cohort signals its startups are now competing in deep-tech categories — space propulsion, satellite servicing, launch vehicles — that were dominated by national agencies a decade ago, with the nine firms gaining direct access to WEF's public-private network.
