Pochettino extends as USMNT manager through 2030 World Cup — SkimNews
SkimNews Take
Locking Pochettino through 2030 trades the usual flexibility of shorter national-team deals for continuity across an entire tournament cycle, a structure more common to clubs than federations.

- Pochettino signed a new contract to remain USMNT manager through the 2030 World Cup, U.S. Soccer announced Monday, shelving months of speculation he would leave despite reported interest from AC Milan and Real Madrid.
- Hired in September 2024 after the U.S. crashed out of the 2024 Copa América group stage, Pochettino led the USMNT to the 2026 World Cup round of 16 — wins over Paraguay, Australia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-0) before a 4-1 loss to Belgium — finishing with a 17-12-2 (W-L-D) record.
- Kenneth C. Griffin, Citadel founder, provided a philanthropic leadership gift to support the reappointment, with additional backing from Scott Goodwin, Adam Freede, and commercial partners; longtime assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino, and Toni Jiménez (plus Sebastian Pochettino and Silvia Tuyà) remain on staff.
- U.S. managers who have signed on for a second World Cup cycle fare poorly historically: Bob Bradley, Jurgen Klinsmann, and Gregg Berhalter were all fired before reaching one, while Bruce Arena missed the knockouts in 2006 after reaching the 2002 quarterfinals.
- For the first time in his USMNT tenure, Pochettino will need to navigate World Cup qualifying — though six Concacaf teams qualify for the 2030 tournament, suggesting qualification itself won't be a hurdle.
- Pochettino told reporters the connection with fans and the U.S. Soccer organization during the World Cup was a "key point" in his decision to stay, saying he believes the gap between the U.S. and the world's best teams "isn't that big."
Why it matters: Pochettino's retention bucks a historic U.S. Soccer pattern: every previous U.S. manager who committed to a second World Cup cycle (Bradley, Klinsmann, Berhalter) was fired before reaching it. With six Concacaf slots making 2030 qualification almost a formality, his true test becomes whether he can actually shrink the gap with elite teams rather than simply survive to the tournament — a goal he publicly committed to.
