Risk of Parkinson’s disease may increase with prolonged exposure to road traffic noise

- The JAMA Neurology study tracked 3.1 million Danish adults aged 40 and over for 18 years using nationwide health register data, making it the largest investigation of road traffic noise and Parkinson's disease to date.
- Researchers found that for every 11.5-decibel rise in noise at the most exposed facade of a home, Parkinson's risk rose 3% over the study period, and noted having a quieter side of the home may mitigate the association.
- Thomas Münzel, one of the study's authors, said the findings should move noise "from a speculative to a credible risk factor" for Parkinson's disease, calling environmental noise "a young entrant" in the risk-factor literature.
- Anna Hansell, an environmental epidemiology professor at the University of Leicester not involved in the study, said noise was "more likely to be a general stressor" than a specific Parkinson's risk factor, and the observational design "doesn't 'prove' causation."
- Dr. Peter Chan of the Nuffield Department of Population Health noted that low socioeconomic status is tied to many Parkinson's risk factors, making it "very hard to disentangle whether the increased risk with noise is totally due to noise itself or something else."
- John Stewart, chair of the UK Noise Association, said the link is strongest where noise is loudest — at main roads — and urged governments and local authorities to focus mitigation there.
- The researchers controlled for air pollution but lacked lifestyle data, while noting chronic noise exposure exceeding WHO thresholds already affects nearly one-third of Europeans.
Why it matters: For the roughly one-third of Europeans chronically exposed to noise above WHO thresholds, the Danish study positions traffic noise as a credible rather than speculative Parkinson's risk factor — particularly near main roads. But independent experts caution the observational design cannot prove causation, and separating the noise effect from low socioeconomic status remains unsolved, meaning any public-health response must hedge on correlation.
