- NFL is eliminating the Pro Bowl Games, shifting focus to celebrating the honor of selection rather than hosting a competitive all-star event.
- Beginning with the 2026 season, 88 players will be named to the Pro Bowl class in late December, with no replacement selections.
- Peter O'Reilly, NFL executive vice president, said it is "OK to be the first league to walk away from a competitive all-star game," while announcing that no AFC vs. NFC game will be held.
- Selected Pro Bowlers will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles during the traditional Pro Bowl weekend.
- Troy Vincent, NFL executive vice president of football operations, said the decision came from player feedback that they "don't want competitive play" after the playoffs and that trying to replicate championship physicality "doesn't sit well."
- The league has staged a traditional Pro Bowl game in some form since 1938 — skipping 2021 due to COVID — before replacing tackle football with the reimagined Games featuring dodgeball, skills challenges, and a flag football finale in 2023.
Why it matters: The NFL is betting that 88 players will value the peer-selected honor over a televised spectacle, ending roughly nine decades of an all-star competition. Fans lose the late-season showcase, but the league gains flexibility to reallocate the Pro Bowl weekend toward a celebration format driven by what players told executives they actually want.
