Nutrients in our food are declining. Can regenerative agriculture save it?

- USDA data from the late 1990s found vitamin C in lemons down almost a third over 22 years, calcium in carrots down more than a quarter, vitamin A in bananas down 57%, and mineral content of wheat down 20–30% since the 1960s.
- Francesca Brkic, working with the University of Lincoln, found iron in kale up to 22 times higher, selenium in dried peas 8 times higher, and folate in carrots up to 20,000 times greater on regenerative farms than conventional ones.
- Dr David Montgomery, a US geologist and co-author of What Your Food Ate, argues ploughing and heavy chemicals destroyed soil's mycorrhizal networks — "the microbial truckers and miners" — and that regenerative practices can return them to work.
- A 2015 Newcastle University review found organic produce provides extra antioxidants equivalent to 1–2 extra portions of fruit and veg a day, and the Bionutrient Institute's multi-year study tied high nutritional value to soil biological activity.
- A Stanford University review and reviews by UK and French food standard agencies found nutrient differences between organic and conventional were small and highly variable, challenging the pro-regenerative findings.
- Dr Naheed Ali warns of "dietary displacement," where consumers perceive regenerative-labelled food as more nutritious and eat less of it, risking inadequate intake of macronutrients and micronutrients.
- Prof Ken Giller and colleagues call it "unlikely" regenerative agriculture can reliably feed the world's 8.3 billion people; Montgomery counters that scaling depends on a "soil health" philosophy rather than specific equipment.
Why it matters: If regenerative agriculture's nutrient-density claims hold at scale, the farming, food-retail and public-health sectors face pressure to shift away from input-heavy conventional methods — but Stanford and UK/French agency reviews showing only small, variable nutrient gains mean the case is far from settled. Consumers face a parallel risk: Dr Ali's "dietary displacement" could mean people eat less of food they assume is more nutritious, undermining dietary intake.
