- CBS Sports president David Berson said there is "no timetable or final decision" on Tony Romo's status, calling it "an evolving situation" at the network's NFL on CBS media day.
- Romo, 46, was arrested July 23 by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office after he was seen passing cars in a gore area and received three citations — including one for refusing to submit to an intoxication test after arrest.
- Sheriff's deputies said Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests and had an open container of alcohol in his black Jeep; he was booked and released the same day.
- CBS placed Romo on leave roughly a week after the arrest; his next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.
- In the interim, J.J. Watt was promoted to the No. 1 booth alongside Jim Nantz, while Ross Tucker joins Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn as the No. 2 analyst.
- Berson said the network must weigh the "impact on our image and our brand" but stressed CBS "has a deep bench and everybody is stepping up" while the review continues.
- Romo has been CBS's top NFL game analyst since 2017 following a playing career (2004–2016) spent entirely with the Dallas Cowboys that included four Pro Bowl selections.
Why it matters: CBS is anchoring its biggest NFL booth with Watt and Nantz through at least Week 4 of the regular season, signaling the network won't risk a ratings-defining decision before Romo's Sept. 21 court date — meaning one of the most-watched analyst pairings in sports television remains on hold indefinitely.
