- Zhang Zhuo, BYD Ocean series sales GM, posted official design sketches Monday night showing a 'brand new layout,' expanded space, 'trident-shaped' front and rear lights, and what he called a more 'extreme' driving posture.
- The new model will be called the Great Seagull and go on sale by the end of 2026, per Zhuo's Chengdu Auto Show reveal last month.
- China's MIIT regulatory filing shows the Great Seagull measures 4,205 mm long, 1,810 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall with a 2,650 mm wheelbase — considerably bigger than the current 3,780 mm Seagull.
- The second-gen swaps the current 55 kW (75 hp) motor for a 95 kW (127 hp) unit and is expected to feature BYD's second-generation Blade Batteries and Flash Charging technology.
- Spy images that surfaced earlier this week revealed a roof-mounted LiDAR, pointing to an upgraded ADAS suite running BYD's 'God's Eye B' system, with interior spy shots showing a larger infotainment screen, redesigned center console, and two-spoke steering wheel.
- The current Seagull starts at 69,900 yuan (~$10,000) in China and ~€22,900 ($26,500) as the Dolphin Surf in Europe; the larger successor is expected overseas likely under €30,000 as the second-gen Dolphin Surf.
Why it matters: BYD is upgrading its cheapest EV with LiDAR-based ADAS, nearly double the horsepower, and significantly more size while keeping the overseas price under €30,000 — intensifying pricing pressure on European entry-level EVs already losing share to the current Dolphin Surf.
