- Samsung Wallet expanded Digital Key access to Volkswagen EVs including the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3 Neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, enabling hands-free and tap-based entry via Galaxy smartphones.
- Volkswagen's Digital Key uses ultra-wideband (UWB) for hands-free entry and NFC for tap-based unlocking and engine start, with Samsung Knox providing security and Samsung Find enabling remote removal if a phone is lost.
- Dr Axel Henrich, VW Passenger Cars' senior vice president of concepts & innovation, called the Digital Key "an important step toward a seamless and connected vehicle experience for our customers."
- Digital Key access began rolling out in Europe to vehicles running ID. software 6.0.1 produced on or after April 27, 2026, spanning 39 supported markets from Albania and Iceland to Spain and Greece.
- Volkswagen has yet to confirm Digital Key availability for US drivers but is reportedly planning to offer Apple Wallet's car key feature on upcoming vehicles.
Why it matters: Galaxy-owning VW EV drivers across 39 European countries can now ditch physical fobs for hands-free UWB and tap-based NFC entry, with multi-user access for valets and remote wipe through Samsung Find. The Europe-first rollout leaves US drivers shut out for now, though planned Apple Wallet support signals VW is hedging across both major phone-wallet ecosystems.
