Netflix Adapts Paiva's 'Happy Old Year' as Series

- Netflix is adapting Marcelo Rubens Paiva's 1982 novel "Happy Old Year" (Feliz Ano Velho) as a series, with an official announcement expected during the ongoing FLIP literary festival in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro.
- "Happy Old Year" is considered foundational in late 20th-century Brazilian literature and recounts the accident that left Paiva tetraplegic at age 20; the novel has previously been adapted into a play, a musical, and an opera.
- Marcelo Rubens Paiva is also the author of "Ainda Estou Aqui," the memoir that became Walter Salles' Oscar-winning film "I'm Still Here" — the highest-profile prior adaptation of his work.
- The series will be produced by Amaia Filmes (Diane Maia) and O2 Filmes (Andrea Barata Ribeiro), the production label behind "City of God"; filming has not yet started.
- Netflix opened a new office in Brazil earlier in 2026 and has been building out a deep Brazilian slate, with Haná Vaisman, its Director of Scripted Series for Brazil, calling the novel's "highly personal account" of youth "universal."
- Paiva said the stream adaptation marks "another marriage between Brazilian literature and the audiovisual arts," bringing his first book to the screen.
