- NBCUniversal agreed to bundle Peacock into YouTube Premium starting early 2027, extending its 2025 YouTube TV distribution deal and billing the arrangement as its biggest wholesale pact to date
- Peacock remains U.S.-only, but YouTube Premium's 125M+ global subscribers outside the U.S. will get access to Universal+ and Hayu in certain markets; the NBCU/Paramount joint venture SkyShowtime is not affected
- Peacock turned a profit six years in and grew to 48 million subscribers per Comcast's Q2 earnings; Comcast Co-CEOs Brian Roberts and Mike Cavanagh are exploring partnerships ahead of NBCU's planned spin-off from Comcast's cable/broadband operations next year
- YouTube Premium's most popular U.S. plan costs $15.99/month and Peacock's lowest tier is $10.99/month standalone; there will be no price change to YouTube Premium, but subscribers will get customization options to add Peacock
- Roberts reached out to YouTube's CEO more than nine months ago to initiate talks, and the deal is expected to add millions of Peacock subscribers; rivals will likely count YouTube-bundled viewers differently
- Beyond the bundle, NBC Sports will produce select live sporting events for YouTube, stream events on NBC Sports' YouTube channel, and NBCU ad tech subsidiary FreeWheel will gain additional scale and inventory
- NBCU's recent bundling spree includes an Apple TV+ bundle last fall, a broad Amazon distribution pact, and a Starz sign-up feature on Peacock's home screen; Peacock also launched on YouTube Primetime Channels last month
Why it matters: Roberts initiated the talks nine months ago, and the deal lands on the heels of Peacock's first-ever profit and 48M subscribers. With NBCU being spun off from Comcast's cable/broadband operations next year, Comcast's leadership needs a streaming growth story — and YouTube Premium's U.S. footprint is the fastest way to add millions of Peacock subscribers without building acquisition funnels from scratch.
