CRISPR-edited beagles lack main dog allergen protein

- Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR Cas9 to insert an extra DNA letter at the start of the Can f 1 gene in skin cells from a female beagle, scrambling the protein's recipe; the team then cloned those cells, transferred 25 embryos to a surrogate, and two — Alfie and Bailey — implanted and developed to term.
- Co-founder Matt Walker, a lifelong allergy sufferer who previously used CRISPR to study neuron development in worms, founded Kindred in 2020 after realizing gene editing could eliminate the main dog allergen; Bailey now lives with Walker, who reports zero allergic reaction to her.
- A published Kindred paper shows Can f 1 is undetectable on Alfie and Bailey and that skin prick tests produced no reactions to their samples — and crucially, that "hypoallergenic" breeds like poodles and goldendoodles still produce Can f 1 and trigger reactions in tests.
- Can f 1 isn't the only dog allergen — minor proteins such as Can f 2 can still trigger reactions, though Walker said Kindred could address those later if a substantial share of allergy sufferers still responded to the edited dogs.
- Commercial release remains years away: Kindred first needs FDA approval, then must engineer a genetically diverse set of founder dogs for each target breed before conventional breeding can begin, and Walker declined to estimate how many founders each breed would require.
- The function of Can f 1 in dogs is unknown, though Walker said mouse experiments gave him confidence deletion would be safe; both dogs appear normal and healthy at nearly two years old, with continued monitoring planned.
Why it matters: Kindred's approach represents the first time CRISPR has been used to eliminate a major allergen in a living companion animal, framing pet allergies as a public health issue rather than a lifestyle inconvenience — and directly challenging the "hypoallergenic breed" marketing that its own data shows is largely false. But the path to market runs through FDA approval and per-breed founder-line engineering, a multi-step process that keeps the technology out of reach for the millions who give up pets because of allergies.
