CRISPR creates first hypoallergenic beagles

- Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR to create two hypoallergenic beagle puppies — Bailey and Alfie — born in September 2024 to a beagle surrogate after scientists edited dog skin cells to switch off the main gene producing allergy-causing proteins.
- Geneticist Matt Walker, a lifelong dog lover who couldn't pet a dog without sneezing, now lives with Bailey; skin prick tests showed he reacted to poodle and goldendoodle extracts but not to samples from the gene-edited beagles' saliva and dander.
- The research, published Wednesday in the Crispr Journal, is the first successful CRISPR-based hypoallergenic dog; prior attempts using cloning produced sicker, genetically similar pups, and a two-year-old effort reduced allergens in a cat named Alsik.
- NYU bioethicist Arthur Caplan warned the approach could discourage adoption of stray and shelter animals not engineered to be allergy-free, while UT Southwestern pathologist Dr. Jeff SoRelle noted the edited gene is the main but not the only dog allergen, leaving broader human effectiveness unproven.
- Walker said the gene edit occurs naturally in some dogs, making harmful effects unlikely — but scientists still need years of monitoring for long-term health effects and ways to make the approach commercially affordable for the millions with dog allergies.
Why it matters: If validated more broadly, the CRISPR approach could eventually let millions of dog-allergy sufferers own pets — but NYU bioethicist Arthur Caplan warns it may divert adopters from shelter animals, and the edited gene covers only the main (not sole) allergy-triggering protein, meaning commercial availability remains years away.
