- Poorna Jagannathan was cast as a series regular in Hulu’s Young Americans pilot, joining Scott Foley, Billie Boullet, Sam Rechner, Mia Isaac, Oscar Winter and Lauren Mei.
- Young Americans follows the children of the nation’s elite at Capitol Crest Academy in Washington, D.C., where their teenage rivalries mirror their parents’ political games and a forbidden romance between students from opposing political families threatens to escalate tensions.
- Maya Washburn, Jagannathan’s character, is a former close friend and political ally of the President who is now a controversial senator galvanizing a disillusioned electorate; her son falls for the President’s daughter.
- Natalia Leite was tapped to direct the pilot, reuniting with Bruce Miller. She co-executive produced and directed the first three episodes of Hulu’s Black Cake and recently directed a block of Netflix’s Age of Innocence and Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
- Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe wrote Young Americans and executive produce alongside Bruce Miller and Priscilla Poriand; Miller and Poriand executive produce on behalf of White Oak, and 20th Television is the studio.
- Poorna Jagannathan most recently starred in HBO’s Lanterns, with credits on Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, Apple’s Wolfs and Hulu’s Deli Boys, and will next be seen in Apple TV’s Nocturne, premiering October 30.
Why it matters: Hulu’s announced cast now reaches seven, with Jagannathan joining six previously announced actors, and Leite adds prior Hulu experience through Black Cake and The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. Her Maya Washburn role also links the President’s family to the opposing family at the center of the pilot’s romance.
