- Pentagon has awarded $24.4 billion to Raytheon for SM-6 production, $20.7 billion for AMRAAM missiles, and $58.6 billion to Lockheed Martin for Patriot missiles to replenish war-depleted stocks, though signing contracts does not immediately restore the arsenal.
- CSIS estimated the US Patriot interceptor stockpile had fallen to fewer than 827 and THAAD interceptors to 278 by July 27, while the CBO says US forces have used between one-half and two-thirds of missile-defense inventory since June 2025.
- US commanders on bases in the Middle East have reportedly begun letting some incoming Iranian missiles land when headed for unpopulated areas, conserving scarce interceptors for threats that could do real harm.
- Interceptor production lead times run 25 to 51 months, and the CBO estimates rebuilding the arsenal will take at least five years even with expanded output — though Lockheed and the Pentagon agreed in January to raise annual THAAD production from 96 to 400 and Patriot PAC-3 from roughly 600 to 2,000 by the end of the decade.
- Ukraine faces an acute Patriot interceptor shortage since the Iran war began; in August Zelensky said Ukraine has two and a half times fewer interceptors than in 2025 while Russia fires twice as many ballistic missiles per month.
- Trump dismissed a Pentagon report on munitions shortages in a recent Time magazine interview while acknowledging that "some stocks are running low," having initially said the Iran war would last just weeks — it is now in its eighth month.
Why it matters: The CBO projects at least five years to rebuild the arsenal, meaning the half-to-two-thirds interceptor drawdown will constrain US deterrence across multiple theaters for the medium term — most acutely in Ukraine, where Zelensky says interceptors are already down 60%. The Pentagon has committed over $103 billion in replenishment contracts whose deliveries won't scale for 25–51 months.
