- Tesla released its Robotaxi app for Android on the Google Play Store on April 24, making the ride‑hailing service available to Android users for the first time.
- Tesla expanded the Robotaxi service from Austin to Dallas and Houston, with geofences covering roughly 12‑15 square miles in Houston’s Jersey Village and Willowbrook areas and 30‑35 square miles in Dallas.
- Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet remains small, with only one vehicle initially deployed in Dallas and Houston (a second added shortly after) and about 40 vehicles in Austin, of which roughly a dozen operate fully driverless while most still have human safety monitors.
- Tesla’s Android app includes Google Pay integration, is free to download, supports over 25 languages, and is currently limited to users in the United States.
- Tesla’s pricing in Dallas is a $3.00 base fare plus $1.40 per mile, while Austin charges a $3.25 base fare plus $1.00 per mile; service runs daily from 6 a.m.
- Waymo operates in 10 U.S. cities with about 3,000 vehicles and delivers over 500,000 fully driverless rides per week, and has been active in Dallas and Houston since February 2026—two months before Tesla’s arrival.
Why it matters: Android users gain access to Tesla’s limited‑area Robotaxi service, but the rollout highlights the service’s modest scale—only a handful of vehicles in three Texas cities, many with safety drivers—and underscores Tesla’s lag behind Waymo’s fully driverless fleet, affecting the company’s autonomy credibility.
