Rugby v cricket - England's George swaps sports to help tackle MND

- Jamie George will captain 'Team Rugby' in a T20 charity match on 19 August at Taunton's County Ground against top County Championship cricketers, raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

- Former players from both sports have been affected by MND: England and Gloucestershire fast bowler Sid Lawrence died in 2025, Scotland lock Doddie Weir died in 2022 after raising millions, and Gloucester lock Ed Slater and former England rugby captain Lewis Moody both live with the disease.
- George, 35, cast his own role as 'a Daren Sammy type' — bat at nine or 10, don't bowl, and 'just be there for morale.'
Why it matters: The match turns two personal milestones into a single fundraiser, with Gregory playing it during his testimonial year and George announcing his own testimonial for next year. Proceeds go to the MND Association, a cause both sports communities have rallied around after losing players like Sid Lawrence (2025) and Doddie Weir (2022) and seeing Ed Slater and Lewis Moody continue to live with the disease.
