- Basel Action Network (BAN) published a report projecting 395–617 million metric tons of e-waste from AI-related equipment retired between 2025 and 2050, roughly enough to fill 23 million 40-foot shipping containers — about six times around the equator.
- BAN's estimate is dramatically higher than prior studies because it counts not just servers and accelerators but power systems, cooling, backup power, and networking gear — infrastructure previous studies missed by about 87% — plus what BAN calls 'AI Waste Contagion' from telecom and personal devices made obsolete by AI advances.
- BAN projects 70,000 metric tons of e-waste per gigawatt of data center capacity, applying that figure to a McKinsey projection of up to 219GW of total data center capacity by 2030.
- The report attributes roughly 15–20% of the 211 million metric tons of annual global e-waste BAN forecasts by 2050 to AI, translating to about 8.6–13.1 million metric tons of AI-related junk each year.
- Globally, less than 25% of the current 68.3 million tons of yearly e-waste is formally collected and recycled, with most dumped into informal channels where burning or burying equipment exposes workers to toxic materials like lead and chromium.
- The US, which has more data centers than any other country, has not ratified the Basel Convention limiting hazardous waste trade, and US recyclers still ship e-waste abroad where it often ends up in backyard recycling putting millions of children at health risk, per the World Health Organization.
- Prior estimates were far more conservative: a 2024 study projected 1.2–5 million tons of AI e-waste by 2030, and a February study projected 131,000–225,000 tons annually by end of decade — roughly equivalent to all e-waste from a country the size of Denmark.
Why it matters: The report reframes the AI buildout as a looming toxic waste crisis, not just an energy or compute story. With less than 25% of the current 68.3 million tons of yearly e-waste formally recycled and the US — the largest data center host — refusing to ratify the Basel Convention, BAN's projection that AI will drive 15–20% of 211 million tons of annual e-waste by 2050 means today's recycling and trade policy decisions will determine whether millions of tons of toxic hardware end up in informal dumps abroad.
