- Bengaluru ranked 2nd in Asia for AI innovation and entered the global top 10 for performance and R&D in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) 2026, according to the Karnataka government.
- The Karnataka government, in partnership with Startup Genome and KDEM, unveiled the findings at VivaTech Paris, with Bengaluru placing 15th globally in the Startup Ecosystem Index and a $152.8 billion ecosystem value.
- Karnataka accounts for approximately 58% of India's national AI venture funding, attracting $39 billion in venture capital from 2021–2025 and ranking 4th in Asia.
- The city's R&D Engine ranking improved from global top 30 in GSER 2025 to top 10 in 2026, reflecting increased patent output and research commercialisation.
- Six Indian ecosystems were featured globally in the GSER 2026 rankings, which assess 350+ innovation ecosystems across six weighted success factors including Performance (27.5%), Funding (20%), and Market Reach (20%).
- Priyank Kharge, Karnataka's IT & BT Minister, called Bengaluru 'increasingly a global DeepTech and AI innovation hub' and framed the recognition as part of Karnataka's 'DeepTech Decade.'
Why it matters: Karnataka absorbing ~58% of India's AI venture funding and Bengaluru's R&D climb from global top 30 to top 10 in a single year concentrates measurable momentum in one state — giving it a quantifiable edge over rival Asian AI hubs and raising the bar for other Indian states chasing the same funding pool.
