JAXA Plans 2048 Comet Sample Return Mission

- JAXA's Next Generation Small-Body Return (NGSR) mission was described in a paper at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference and is under assessment as a large-class mission for the 2030s, targeting comet 289P/Blanpain.
- Comet 289P/Blanpain was discovered in 1819, lost for two centuries, rediscovered in 2003, and confirmed as a comet only after a 2013 outburst; at roughly 160 meters in radius with low gas and dust activity, it offers a safer environment for proximity operations than an actively erupting comet.
- NGSR's first goal is to excavate and sample subsurface material to capture pre-solar organics and primordial ice and dust, providing direct evidence that the chemical precursors for life could have been delivered from interstellar space.
- The second scientific goal is to probe the comet's internal structure with seismometers and a bistatic radar, searching for meter-sized voids that could reveal how microscopic dust grains clumped into kilometer-scale planetesimals.
- The mission timeline calls for a 2034 launch, arrival at 289P/Blanpain in 2041 after 1.5 years of proximity operations, and sample return to Earth in 2048 — a 14-year span from launch to landing.
- The lander will use a Small Carry-on Impactor (SCI) — the same technique Hayabusa2 used on Ryugu — to blast a crater exposing pristine subsurface material, then analyze the highly volatile organics on-site with an ultra-small multi-turn time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MULTUM-sp) before the samples are freeze-dried for a cryogenic clean-room delivery on Earth.
Why it matters: If NGSR succeeds, it will return the first truly pristine, deep-frozen material from the early solar system — directly testing whether life's chemical precursors were delivered by comets. JAXA is the only space agency with a proven track record of small-body sample return, giving it a defensible shot at a discovery no asteroid mission could replicate.
