Scientists find the strength training “sweet spot” for a longer life

- The study, tracking nearly 150,000 US nurses and health professionals for up to 30 years, found that 90-120 minutes of weekly strength training was linked to a 13% lower risk of dying from any cause.
- Disease-specific benefits were largest for cardiovascular disease (19% lower risk of death) and neurological conditions, mainly dementia (27% lower risk).
- Combining strength training with at least the recommended 150 minutes of weekly moderate aerobic activity — walking, cycling, swimming — was associated with the lowest overall mortality risk: about 45% lower.

- Caveats: the study is observational and relied on self-reported exercise data, so it cannot prove strength training directly causes longer life, though researchers adjusted for diet, smoking, and aerobic activity.
- The prescription is achievable without a gym: two short weekly sessions covering all major muscle groups, paired with everyday aerobic activity, appears sufficient for the longevity benefit.
Why it matters: For the large share of adults who skip resistance training, the study frames just one to two hours a week — doable at home with bodyweight exercises — as a meaningful longevity intervention, with the biggest payoff against the country's two leading killers: heart disease and dementia.
