Scientists found the strength training sweet spot for a longer life

- Researchers found that 90–119 minutes of weekly strength training was associated with a 13% lower risk of death from any cause, a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular death, and a 27% lower risk of neurological disease death, with no additional benefit above 120 minutes per week.

Why it matters: The findings give clinicians and public health guidelines a concrete dose target — 90–120 minutes weekly — rather than vague encouragement, with distinct benefit thresholds for cancer versus cardiovascular and neurological mortality. For the roughly 54% of participants who reported no strength training at all, the gap between zero and even 30 minutes a week may be the most actionable takeaway, though the observational design means the numbers reflect association, not proven causation.
