- Edrees Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee during Friday practice and will miss the season, a Tennessee spokesperson told ESPN; he left the field in an ambulance and was taken to UT Medical Center in Knoxville.
- Farooq, a junior from Columbia, Maryland, was expected to be a leader in new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' scheme after starting all 13 games last season, when he ranked second in the SEC with four forced fumbles and added two interceptions and 76 tackles.
- Tennessee football said in a Saturday statement: "We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process. We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall."
- Coach Josh Heupel added three experienced transfers to the secondary — Michigan's TJ Metcalf, Kansas State's Qua Moss, and Penn State's Dejuan Lane — to address a defense that ranked next-to-last in the SEC in pass defense (244.8 YPG) and 14th in scoring defense (28.8 PPG) in 2025.
- TJ Metcalf is the projected starter at the other safety spot, Qua Moss is expected to start at nickelback, and Dejuan Lane, who was playing behind Farooq in preseason camp, should now move up the depth chart alongside sophomores and freshmen competing for snaps.
- The injury is the first significant test of a retooled secondary that Tennessee spent the offseason overhauling after finishing 14th in the SEC in scoring defense a year ago.
Why it matters: Tennessee lost its most productive defensive back from a 2025 secondary that already finished last in the SEC against the pass, forcing three transfers — Metcalf, Moss, and Lane — into expanded roles before Week 1 and leaving Knowles with limited experienced depth behind them.
