- Indiana is counting on TCU transfer Josh Hoover at quarterback to replace national champion Fernando Mendoza, but Hoover threw 33 interceptions over the last three seasons — the third-most in the FBS during that span — and has never completed better than 66.5% of his passes in a season.
- Notre Dame added Purdue kicker Spencer Porath (15-of-17 on field goals, 6-of-6 from beyond 40 yards in 2025) after the Irish made just five field goals all season — the third-fewest in the country — prompting coach Marcus Freeman to largely stop attempting them late in the year.
- Ohio State is relying on Duke transfer Terry Moore at safety to replace All-American Caleb Downs; Moore missed 2025 with a knee injury suffered in Duke's 2024 bowl game but was previously among the nation's best at the position.
- Texas added Wake Forest OT Malvin Siani to fix an offensive line that ranked 109th nationally in pressures allowed last season, pairing him with returning left tackle Trevor Goosby to form what the article calls potentially the nation's strongest tackle duo.
- Miami turned to Missouri edge rusher Damon Wilson, who posted nine sacks in the SEC last season, to replace the first-round edge tandem of Akeem Mesidor and Rueben Bain that fueled the Hurricanes' playoff run.
- Texas A&M had to replace both starting tackles with portal additions LSU's Tyree Adams and Alabama's Wilkin Formby, because Mark Nabou was the only returning starter on an offensive line that powered a top-25 scoring unit in 2025.
- Oklahoma brought in Florida TE Hayden Hansen as part of a revamped tight end room coached by former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, targeting more 12-personnel looks to fix a 2025 offense that ranked 97th nationally in yards per play.
Why it matters: The transfer portal has become the single largest variable separating College Football Playoff contenders from the rest, with each of these top 25 teams banking its season on a specific newcomer. Indiana's bet on Hoover is the highest-stakes swing: replacing a national champion QB with a passer who led the FBS in interception volume for three straight years. Multiple title hopefuls (Ohio State, Miami, Oregon) are also replacing first-round NFL talent on defense, meaning the portal is essentially being asked to replicate elite production that money used to buy through recruiting classes.
