- Harvey Elliott returned to Liverpool early this summer after playing just nine games and 277 minutes on loan at Aston Villa, calling the spell "mentally... a very tough one"
- Aston Villa declined to trigger a £35m permanent signing clause that activated at 10 appearances, with manager Unai Emery describing the situation as "embarrassing for everyone involved"
- Elliott still helped Villa win the Europa League last season despite his limited minutes and said he has "no hard feelings" about how the loan unfolded
- Liverpool are under new coaching staff this pre-season, with Elliott featuring in both friendlies including a 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York
- Elliott made 18 Premier League appearances in Liverpool's 2024-25 title-winning season under Arne Slot, and last summer won Player of the Tournament as England U21s lifted Euro 2025
Why it matters: Elliott is competing for minutes under a new Liverpool manager at 23, with his development pathway hinging on whether the coaching staff see him as part of the first-team picture or another loan candidate — a conversation Elliott says he'll initiate "at the right time" after reaffirming his commitment to the club.
