- Sanjay Gupta died at 59 on Oct. 30 after falling at his Mumbai residence and hitting his head, with police in Mumbai's Versova neighborhood filing an accidental death report
- Milap Zaveri, a longtime friend who wrote the dialogue for "Kaante," confirmed to PTI that Gupta "fell and hit his head," while Deputy Commissioner Purushottam Karad said Gupta's family was asleep at the time, learned of the incident the next morning and lodged no complaint or suspicion
- Sanjay Dutt was Gupta's most frequent collaborator, appearing in 10 films with him, including projects Gupta produced, after Gupta's 1994 directorial debut "Aatish: Feel the Fire" with Dutt and Aditya Pancholi
- Kaante (2002) was Gupta's biggest success, an ensemble Los Angeles-set heist thriller with Amitabh Bachchan, Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav; the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks forced changes to its location schedule, and it earned a Filmfare best-director nomination
- Show East, the Korean production company behind "Oldboy," told Star News in November 2005 it was considering legal remedies if Gupta's "Zinda" (2006), starring Dutt and John Abraham, proved substantially similar, while Tarantino later voiced admiration for "Kaante" in a 2007 interview
- Kaante 2 was already in development: after a dispute involving Gupta's banner White Feather Films and Pritish Nandy Communications was resolved, he said on the "InControversial" podcast earlier this year that the sequel story was worked out "at a very base level" and he intended to start writing the screenplay
- Sanjay Dutt paid tribute posting "Gupts, my brother," while Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty recalled "25 Years of working together" and called Gupta "one of the sanest voices from mainstream Hindi cinema," and "Raees" director Rahul Dholakia credited him as "maybe the first" to pitch film ideas through trailers and cut promos
Why it matters: The concrete loss is the sequel: Gupta said the "Kaante 2" story was worked out only at "a very base level," with screenplay writing still ahead, so his death lands before the project moved past premise. It also removes a director colleagues credit with 10 films alongside Sanjay Dutt and an X voice on Hindi cinema's creative and commercial direction.
