- Realta Fusion announced a deal with Madison Gas and Electric to place one of the first grid-connected fusion power plants in the country in Wisconsin, targeting a 200-megawatt facility by the mid-2030s, with MGE making an undisclosed equity investment

- Proxima Fusion plans to build Stellaris on an old fission plant site in southern Germany being decommissioned by RWE, which is also an investor in the startup, with operations targeted for the late 2030s
- Utilities are being driven to the table by surging AI data center demand and the need for 24/7 baseload power that wind and solar cannot provide, pushing traditionally risk-averse power providers to place long-shot bets on a technology still years from commercialization
Why it matters: Fusion startups gain capital-efficient access to engineering expertise, permitting help, interconnection sites, and real estate that would otherwise be costly or unavailable, while utilities — typically risk-averse — are placing decade-long bets to hedge against a power-hungry AI era where intermittent renewables fall short. With at least five major utility-fusion tie-ups now announced across the U.S. and Europe, fusion has crossed from science experiment into utility procurement strategy.
