- Google will limit free Gemini users to only the Flash Lite model starting October 9th, removing free access to both the standard Gemini Flash and Gemini Pro models that are currently available at no cost.
- Google AI Plus subscribers ($4.99/month) will also lose access to Gemini Pro, with Google saying they will receive an email notifying them when that access ends.
- Gemini Pro and the "Deep Think" advanced reasoning option will be restricted to Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) or Ultra ($99.99/month) subscribers after the changes take effect.
- Google is also introducing a $4.99/month AI Plus plan for users who want access to the standard Gemini Flash model after the free cutback, though that tier no longer includes Pro.
- Users can still choose low, medium, or high effort levels for each model, but Google warns that higher effort levels can exhaust Gemini usage limits faster.
Why it matters: Free users lose access to everything except Flash Lite, and even $4.99/month AI Plus subscribers lose Gemini Pro entirely. Google's most capable features — Gemini Pro and Deep Think — are now locked behind subscriptions that cost $19.99 to $99.99 per month, effectively forcing serious users into the top two pricing tiers.
