- Sony launched Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling tier for the regular PS5, developed through its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD.
- QSSR sits below the PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which Sony calls the "gold standard" — because the base PS5 lacks dedicated machine learning silicon, QSSR targets upscaled ~1440p rather than PSSR's 4K output.
- Daniel Craig, Sony's principal graphics R&D engineer, told Digital Foundry that on PS5 Pro developers "almost uniformly output to 4K," while on PS5 "teams have to be more flexible, tuning not just render resolution, but also their intermediate and final presentation targets."
- Craig also called QSSR "fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR" after just a few days of tuning, and Sony said the tech will be "offered broadly to all PlayStation developers."
- Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two titles with QSSR support, receiving patches today; the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition also launches today.
- Digital Foundry wrote that QSSR's potential is "remarkable," noting that "low resolution and poor upscaling have impacted so many titles in this generation" and that QSSR could make "a big difference."
Why it matters: Sony's base PS5, which lacks the dedicated ML silicon that powers PSSR on the Pro, will get AI upscaling that targets ~1440p rather than 4K — but engineer Daniel Craig's claim that QSSR is a near-drop-in replacement for PSSR means the barrier for PS5 developers is just a few days of tuning, potentially improving image quality across the massive base-PS5 install base that Digital Foundry says has suffered from poor upscaling this generation.
