- Sony launched Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI upscaling technology for the standard PS5 developed through its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD
- QSSR sits below PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which Sony calls "the gold standard" for the PS5 Pro, with Digital Foundry finding it slower because the base PS5 lacks dedicated machine learning silicon
- Sony expects QSSR to deliver closer to upscaled 1440p on standard PS5, compared to the upscaled 4K achievable on PS5 Pro, per engineer Daniel Craig
- QSSR is "fundamentally a drop-in replacement for titles that already support PSSR" after only a few days of tuning, making broad adoption across existing PS5 games far more feasible
- Sony will offer QSSR "broadly to all PlayStation developers," with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei receiving patches today as the first titles to support it
- Digital Foundry called the potential "remarkable," noting that low resolution and poor upscaling have impacted "so many titles in this generation" on base PS5
Why it matters: Base PS5 owners gain access to AI upscaling that could meaningfully improve image quality across a library long hampered by sub-native rendering, but the absence of dedicated ML silicon caps QSSR at roughly 1440p rather than the 4K that PS5 Pro delivers. For developers, the "drop-in replacement" design means a few days of tuning can bring the tech to any game already built around PSSR, dramatically lowering the barrier to patching in better visuals.
