- Japan Meteorological Agency raised the volcanic alert for Mount Tokachi (2,077m) in Hokkaido from level 2 to 3 on Sept 12, citing an increase in large earthquakes near the volcano since August and warning that an eruption could affect areas within ~3km of the crater.
- Kamifurano issued an evacuation order for the Fukiage hot spring district, about 3km from the crater, and told elderly residents of the nearby Tokachidake hot spring area to leave.
- Hakugin-so lodging in the Fukiage area temporarily closed under the new alert, while Ryounkaku hotel in the Tokachidake area remained open but recommended evacuation for elderly guests.
- The Sapporo Regional Headquarters of the JMA warned residents in Furano, Biei, Kamifurano, Minamifurano, and Shintoku of possible ash fall and ejection of small volcanic rocks.
