- Proximity Media signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to exclusively develop TV series, with the company previously holding an overall TV deal at Disney that expired earlier this year
- Ryan Coogler and his Proximity co-founders Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian issued a joint statement saying the company will partner with Netflix executives Bela, Jinny, and Nne to develop new series
- Proximity Media's TV division has produced Marvel's 'Ironheart,' the National Geographic docuseries 'Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time,' and the animated 'Black Panther' spinoff 'Eyes of Wakanda'
- Ryan Coogler won his first Oscar for best original screenplay for 'Sinners,' which grossed $365 million globally and won five Oscars including best actor for Michael B. Jordan playing twins
- Zinzi Coogler, a Golden Globe-winning producer on 'Sinners,' was also an EP on 'Ironheart,' 'Judas and the Black Messiah,' 'Space Jam: A New Legacy,' and 'Creed III'
- Sev Ohanian, a Golden Globe-winning screenwriter and producer, has credits including 'Searching,' 'Run,' 'Missing,' and served as a producer on 'Sinners'
- Jinny Howe, Netflix's head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, said Proximity has built a 'remarkable reputation for championing visionary creators' and 'producing stories that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide'
Why it matters: The deal gives Netflix exclusive access to Ryan Coogler's production outfit as it competes for prestige television talent, while Proximity gains a fresh home after its Disney pact expired earlier this year — the company's recent track record includes an Oscar-winning film ('Sinners') and established Disney-era TV properties like 'Ironheart' and 'Eyes of Wakanda.'
