- BYD launched the Great Tang flagship full-size electric SUV with a base Premium EV price of 239,900 yuan ($35,500) and a Flagship EV starting at 269,900 yuan ($40,000), available in EV and plug-in hybrid variants.
- BYD said preorders for the Great Tang surpassed 150,000 by its official launch — a single-vehicle record for the company — after climbing from 30,000 in the first 24 hours of preorders opening on April 24 at the Beijing Auto Show to over 100,000 within two weeks.
- The Great Tang delivers up to 590 miles (950 km) of CLTC range on its Flagship trim's 130.15 kWh battery, and uses BYD's 1,000V architecture with Flash Charging to recharge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes.
- BYD offers single-motor (496 hp) and dual-motor (784 hp combined) powertrains in a 2+2+3 seven-seat configuration, with three dashboard-spanning screens, a drop-down rear entertainment display, zero-gravity captain's chairs with heating/ventilation/massage, and a built-in cooler.
- The Great Tang ships with BYD's God's Eye B ADAS suite, including a roof-mounted Lidar enabling highway Navigation on Autopilot and smart remote parking, plus Disus-A intelligent damping and dual-chamber air suspension.
- BYD positioned the Great Tang — measuring 5,263 mm long with a 3,130 mm wheelbase — against the Li Auto L9, Hyundai IONIQ 9, and Kia EV9 as it moves upmarket from ultra-cheap models like the sub-$10,000 Seagull.
Why it matters: The Great Tang pairs a $35,500 starting price with nearly 600 miles of range and five-minute charging — specs that compress the value gap to premium electric SUVs from established rivals. BYD's 150,000 preorders at this price point show Chinese buyers will pay premium prices for a domestic flagship, giving the company a direct line into the luxury segment it previously left to imports.
