Earthrise Fast-Tracks 270 MW Illinois Solar via Gas Plant Grid Hookup

- Earthrise Energy brought its 270 MWac Archtop Solar Project online in Illinois on June 9 by tapping into the existing grid connection at its Gibson City natural gas peaking plant, avoiding a new interconnection.
- The project is the first to use Earthrise's surplus interconnection strategy, which secured approval through MISO's surplus interconnection process instead of entering the grid operator's traditional queue.
- The hybrid setup has the solar farm supply power when the sun is shining, while the fast-start gas peaker ramps up when solar output drops and peak demand rises.
- Earthrise CEO Jeff Hunter said Illinois needs additional energy resources now and that the approach could serve as a blueprint for future development across the region, aligning with Governor Pritzker's clean energy vision.
- Earthrise is developing roughly 1.5 GW of additional solar in Illinois using the same strategy, including Northwest Solar and Glacier Moraine in Cumberland and Coles counties, Plum Valley and Pride of the Prairie in Will County, and Tilton Solar in Vermilion County.
