- rPlus Energies announced its $1.1 billion Green River Energy Center in Emery County, Utah is now commercially online after a June 22 commissioning ceremony, combining 400 MW of solar with a 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery energy storage system.
- The Green River Energy Center is built with 993,492 solar panels and 484 Tesla Megapacks, making it the largest solar-plus-storage facility in electric power company PacifiCorp's six-state service territory.
- The project is expected to generate more than $55 million in property tax revenue for schools and public services, with construction supporting hundreds of jobs including work performed by local contractors.
- Project partners committed $375,000 in scholarships for local students pursuing careers that strengthen the region's energy workforce and announced a $45,000 donation to the Ferron Fire Department.
- The facility advances Operation Gigawatt, Utah's 2024 state initiative to double energy production over the next decade — a plan that relies mostly on advanced nuclear and geothermal, treats solar and storage as a complement, and explicitly adds new capacity alongside existing fossil fuel plants rather than replacing them.
Why it matters: PacifiCorp ratepayers across six Western states gain 800 MW of new dispatchable solar-plus-storage capacity, with $55 million in projected property tax revenue flowing to Emery County schools and public services. The project is also a real-world test of Utah's 'add, don't retire' energy doctrine — pairing utility-scale renewables with the existing fossil fleet rather than displacing it.
