- National Urban League released its 50th annual "State of Black America" report, warning Black Americans' economic and political prospects have worsened due to Trump administration policy changes.
- Marc Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, said attacks targeting Black Americans will also broadly impact working, poor, and aspirational middle-class Americans.
- The report cites Trump's overhaul of the DOJ Civil Rights Division, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act as examples of reversed civil rights policies.
- Morial condemned companies that cooperated with what he called an "economic assault" on Black Americans through DEI rollbacks, though noted "every company has not bent the knee."
- The report lauds President Biden's COVID stimulus, minority small business support, and bipartisan infrastructure bill as "the most consequential federal investments in Black America since the Great Society."
- Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, viewed as a potential 2028 presidential contender, contributed an essay calling closing the racial wealth gap "a matter of moral clarity" but cautioning "government alone cannot" do it.
- The report notes that calls for racial healing in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder "feel like a fever dream," while urging Americans to act at the ballot box and with their pocketbooks.
Why it matters: The Urban League's 50th anniversary report frames the Trump administration's civil rights and DEI rollbacks not as isolated policy changes but as a direct threat to the broader American economic mobility narrative. With contributors that include sitting Democratic senators and a potential 2028 presidential contender, the report doubles as both advocacy document and campaign infrastructure for civil rights groups heading into the next election cycle.
