- Impossible Dream Entertainment is partnering with the UK’s Wall to Wall to develop and executive produce The Invited, a supernatural mystery-thriller inspired by bestselling author Wendy Webb’s ghost-story novels.
- The Invited will not draw on one novel: no Webb book carries that title, and the series instead weaves her works into one interconnected haunted world; the books are set in the fictional, historic lakeside town of Wharton, with the world expanding season after season.
- The End of Temperance Dare is the source novel for season one, while other adaptation details are being kept under wraps.
- Helen Black is adapting the series with Jeff Howard; Black wrote the BAFTA- and International Emmy-nominated Life and Death in the Warehouse, while Howard co-wrote Gerald’s Game, was a writer and supervising producer on The Haunting of Hill House, and executive produced Midnight Mass.
- Shaun Redick and his wife, Yvette Yates Redick, are partnering to secure rights to Webb’s novels; Redick said the books combine “drama, romance, tension and scares” and are “made for series television.”
- Wall to Wall is part of Warner Bros. International Television Production Group and has credits including BBC One’s Waterloo Road, the BAFTA- and Golden Globe-nominated The Girl, The Windermere Children, The Scandalous Lady W and New Tricks.
- Wendy Webb, a Minnesota native whose most recently published novel is 2024’s The Witches of Santo Stefano, said life “got a little surreal” upon learning Jeff Howard was involved, then praised Helen Black after meeting her.
Why it matters: For Wendy Webb, the announced adaptation combines multiple ghost-story novels into one interconnected television universe, while season one has a defined source in The End of Temperance Dare. That gives Webb and the producers a concrete starting point without reducing the adaptation to a single book.
