- Democratic lawmakers pushed back Friday on Trump's decision to lift sanctions on Russian oil, during ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran and the Russia-Ukraine war.
- The deal will permit Russia under Putin to supply 300,000 tons of diesel to global markets suffering fuel shortages.
- Across coverage of the backlash, Trump escalated by urging Ukraine to replace Zelensky over the diesel deal, per The Hill and Axios headlines.
- Zelensky told Axios the deal with Putin is "not fair and not honest," framing it as a betrayal during wartime.
Why it matters: The deal directly cuts against the U.S. policy of starving Russia's energy revenues during the Ukraine war — at the exact moment U.S. forces are conducting operations against Iran. Democratic objections frame the timing as a wartime energy allocation that funnels volume to Moscow while American military resources are deployed elsewhere, making this a wartime-logistics flashpoint rather than a routine sanctions tweak.
