DNA reveals patrilineal kinship in Scottish Neolithic tombs

- Researchers analyzed ancient DNA from individuals buried in Neolithic chambered tombs in Caithness and the Orkney Islands, dating from c. 3800–3200 cal. BC, and found that many biologically male individuals in the same or nearby tombs were close paternal-line relatives.
- Professor Vicki Cummings of Cardiff University, the lead author, said the results are consistent with patrilineal descent being traced in the region, calling this social connection "as important as pots, cows and axes" for the people introducing the Neolithic into Britain.

- In Orkney, two females buried there showed genetic connections across the sea to the Scottish mainland, indicating kinship networks extended between island and mainland communities beyond the patrilineal pattern.
- The findings, published in the journal Antiquity, suggest the construction and use of these tombs was a means to trace lines of descent and project them into the future, with mortuary practices serving as a key expression of group identity across northern Scotland.
