Fossils Reveal Early Tetrapods Skipped Tadpole Stage

- Jason Pardo and Arjan Mann at Chicago's Field Museum examined two 2-centimeter baby embolomere fossils from the Mazon Creek site dating to 307–309 million years ago, with soft tissue and egg yolk preserved.
- Embolomeres were the largest tetrapods and top predators of the Carboniferous Period, reaching about 2 meters in adulthood, mostly aquatic but capable of clambering onto land with small legs.
- The baby fossils had external yolk sacs — resembling young lungfish — and lacked the external gills typical of amphibian larvae, while already possessing fully formed adult-like skulls and skeletons.
- Two other early tetrapod species from the same period and location, plus lungfish and coelacanths, also show no tadpole-like stage, making the absence of that life stage "vanishingly unlikely" to be a later evolutionary loss, Pardo said.
- John Long at Flinders University called the study a much-needed fill-in for a knowledge gap, showing early tetrapod-like fishes "did not need to develop a tadpole phase in order to invade land."
Why it matters: The textbook narrative of land colonization has long hinged on a metamorphic leap — fish with tadpole-like larvae eventually growing limbs and walking ashore. This evidence suggests that transition was far more gradual: animals already built like adults simply started spending more time on land. It rewrites a foundational chapter in evolutionary biology used to teach how vertebrates, including humans, came to live on solid ground.
