Freud's Model Resurfaces in Modern Neuroscience

- Erik Stänicke, Bendik Hovet, and Line Indrevoll Stänicke from the University of Oslo's Department of Psychology published a paper in the journal Entropy (2026, Vol. 28, Issue 3) arguing that predictive neuroscience and psychoanalysis are describing the same underlying mental processes from different perspectives.
- The paper compares the brain's role as a prediction machine — constantly generating expectations and updating them against sensory input — with psychoanalytic theories about how people interpret and experience the world, a parallel Freud's successors have explored for over 130 years.
- Projection, a core psychoanalytic concept, maps onto the brain's predictive processes: "when we attribute qualities, intentions or feelings to other people, our brain shapes our experience of the world in line with established expectations," Stänicke said.
- Both frameworks describe the mind as seeking stability and predictability — what psychoanalysis calls recreating familiar relational patterns and what neuroscience calls reducing uncertainty by relying on existing expectations (homeostasis).
- The researchers argue rigid mental symptoms like paranoid ideas or an internalized critical voice may be "stable but not very flexible prediction models," pointing to people who automatically expect criticism or rejection and filter all situations through that lens.
- Expectations are stored not only as conscious beliefs but in procedural memory expressed through relational ways of being, the authors argue, meaning psychotherapy sometimes has to work relationally — new experiences between therapist and patient can gradually shift entrenched patterns.
- Combining neuroscience's biological mechanisms with psychoanalysis's focus on subjective experience could open "a more holistic psychology, in which both neurological mechanisms and subjective experience are included," the researchers conclude.
Why it matters: For the fields of psychotherapy and computational neuroscience, the paper proposes a concrete translational bridge: neuroscience can ground long-standing psychoanalytic concepts biologically, while psychoanalysis gives neuroscience richer tools for studying how predictions are subjectively experienced. The clinical implication stated directly in the paper is that entrenched relational patterns, because they are stored in procedural memory, may require relational therapy rather than purely cognitive intervention to shift.
