- NextEra Energy expects to close its Dominion Energy merger by late 2027, targeting 11% annual growth through 2032 — more than doubling the combined company's size — with shareholder-funded bill credits in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
- Virginia State Corporation Commission has scheduled its first public hearing on the merger for November after NextEra's filing triggered the state's six-month review process.
- NextEra is negotiating with the U.S. and Japanese governments for up to 9.5 GW of gas-fired generation at data center hubs in Texas and Pennsylvania, though CEO John Ketchum acknowledged definitive agreements remain incomplete after previously targeting a spring close.
- NextEra is discussing 30 data center hubs with hyperscalers, utilities, and the U.S. government, but executives provided no specifics on projects beyond the Texas and Pennsylvania gas proposal.
- NextEra Energy Resources added 3.6 GW to its backlog in Q2 — 0.9 GW solar, 2 GW battery storage, and 0.7 GW wind — as energy storage becomes an increasingly important growth area.
- NextEra Energy Resources has recontracted more than 1,100 MW so far in 2025 at roughly $20/MWh above prior contracts, with 7.5 GW of recontracting opportunities through 2032 including 1.5 GW of nuclear.
- Florida Power & Light is in advanced discussions on 12 GW of large load and expects to serve 8 GW by 2032, with at least one large-load tariff announcement slated for year-end.
- Duane Arnold nuclear power plant remains on track to re-enter service by early 2029.
Why it matters: NextEra's late-2027 Dominion merger close would create a combined utility targeting 11% annual growth through 2032 while delivering rate credits across three states. The 9.5 GW gas-fired deal for Texas and Pennsylvania data center hubs shows NextEra directly pairing new generation with hyperscaler demand, with CEO Ketchum confirming talks on 30 such hubs but no other specifics yet.
