- Tesla filed an intent-to-use trademark application for 'Megapod' (serial number 99893717) with the USPTO, covering modular AI data center hardware systems that integrate servers, networking equipment, power distribution units, and cooling into a single self-contained unit.
- The filing lands less than a year after Tesla killed its Dojo supercomputer in August 2025, with Elon Musk calling the Dojo 2 design 'an evolutionary dead end' after much of the team departed.
- Tesla's homegrown AI silicon track record is shaky: its AI5 chip taped out nearly two years behind schedule, and AI6 has slipped about six months, pushing mass production to late 2027 amid Samsung's 2nm line struggles.
- Tesla's own AI training cluster, Cortex at Gigafactory Texas, runs on roughly 67,000 Nvidia H100-equivalent GPUs — making Tesla a major Nvidia customer rather than a competing hardware vendor.
- The competitive set Tesla would enter is dominated by Nvidia's GB200 NVL72 rack-scale system and its DGX SuperPOD (scaling past 9,000 GPUs), with Dell's PowerEdge XE9712 and Supermicro's GB200 NVL72 SuperCluster also shipping on the same platform.
- Tesla's genuine AI-adjacent business is power, not compute: its Megapack and Megablock energy storage products sell into AI data centers, with Musk's xAI purchasing roughly $1 billion of Megapacks to keep its training runs powered.
- The 'Megapod' name is already contested — immersion-cooling specialist Submer sells a product called MegaPod and holds a registered trademark in a related class, and a top comment notes Mitsubishi Electric Power Products has held a MEGAPOD trademark in class 009 since January 29, 2013.
Why it matters: Tesla has shipped almost no merchant AI compute hardware despite years of AI announcements, and TSLA is down more than 20% YTD in 2026 while the rest of the Magnificent Seven rode the AI infrastructure surge — making the Megapod filing read as a narrative play for the AI trade. The only Tesla AI-adjacent business with real revenue is Megapack energy storage, which is why a Megapod built around Tesla's power electronics and thermal management would be defensible while a Tesla-designed server challenging Nvidia's GB200 NVL72 would not.
