- World Weather Attribution scientists found that global heating made hot, dry, windy wildfire conditions at least 20 times more likely in Spain and twice as likely in France, comparing today's climate to a world with 1.4C (2.5F) less warming.
- The analysis assessed the seven-day period with the highest "daily severity ratings" (DSR) in each country, finding this year's blazes were worsened by "whiplash conditions" — a wet winter and spring that boosted vegetation growth, which then dried into abundant fuel.
- Wildfire smoke pushed peak particulate pollution up to 20 times above "fair air quality" levels, with extremely poor air quality detected up to 400 km from the fires; about 1.5 million people a year are estimated to have their lives shortened by wildfire smoke globally.
- Since early July, the blazes have killed people, destroyed thousands of homes, and forced more than 300,000 to flee across Spain and France, with additional major fires in the UK and Greece, where three firefighters died.
- Dr Clair Barnes of Imperial College London, part of the WWA team, called the findings "extremely scary," noting "it's still early in the season — and with another heatwave looming," in what she described as a clear sign of escalating human-caused warming.
- UN climate chief Simon Stiell labeled the events "megafires," blaming continued burning of coal, oil, and gas and urging all countries to "move faster from fossil fuels to renewables" to limit worsening wildfire impacts.
