- San Francisco 49ers ruled Mike Evans (Achilles tendinitis), Nick Bosa (calf), Deebo Samuel Sr. (hamstring), Luke Gifford (groin), Garret Wallow (hamstring) and Marques Sigle (ankle) out for Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
- Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers are likely to have fewer than the maximum 48 players on the game-day roster even after Saturday practice-squad elevations, and said he has discussed players playing out of position—a situation he had never encountered in his career.
- Christian Kirk is expected to be activated from injured reserve and set to play against Atlanta after Friday’s release of Ogbo Okoronkwo created a roster spot; his questionable designation is procedural, Shanahan said, while Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson remain unavailable at receiver.
- Mike Evans has an extra week before San Francisco’s Week 8 bye to treat Achilles tendinitis that flared just before halftime against Washington; he did not return to that game and missed practice this week.
- Nick Bosa has been sidelined since before Week 3 against Arizona and was held out of practice this week after a workout left him sore, leaving Mykel Williams, Romello Height, Keion White and Khalid Kareem as the available edge rushers against Atlanta.
- Upton Stout and Siran Neal returned to practice Friday after missing the previous two days, but both remained questionable for Sunday because of shoulder and neck injuries, respectively.
Why it matters: With six players ruled out, Shanahan said San Francisco is likely to have fewer than the maximum 48 players available Sunday, and he has discussed position switches with some players to cover absences. Christian Kirk is expected to return from injured reserve, but the receiver unit remains missing five players; Atlanta therefore faces a materially depleted 49ers roster.
