John Wells Re-Ups Big Overall Deal To Stay At Warner Bros. Television

- John Wells signed a new three-year overall deal extension with Warner Bros. Television, running through mid-2030, with terms believed comparable to the prior extension that followed a 2019 nine-figure pact.
- The renewal marks Wells' 40th year at WBTV, where he has worked continuously since landing a story editor job in 1986.
- The Pitt — Wells' HBO Max medical drama, which he executive produces alongside ER alums R. Scott Gemmill and Noah Wyle — leads all programs at the 2026 Emmys with 25 nominations and just wrapped a second season that outpaced the first in weekly viewership.
- Wells also executive produces two Netflix series: the renewed limited series Untamed starring Eric Bana, and the upcoming Unaccustomed Earth, an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's short story collection on which Wells serves as showrunner.
- Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, called Wells "one of the most respected and accomplished creative talents in our industry."
- The deal is notable because Warner Bros. Discovery is being acquired by David Ellison's Paramount; Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) moved to Disney's 20th Television earlier this summer when her WBTV deal ended.
Why it matters: With Wells signed through mid-2030, Warner Bros. Television retains its longest-tenured and most decorated producer during the WBD-to-Paramount ownership transition — a direct contrast to Quinta Brunson's exit to Disney earlier this summer. Wells also exec-produces two Netflix series, showing that WBTV's top talent pipeline now feeds rival streamers, not just HBO Max.
